Immigrants and Food Stamps

From the Washington Post:

House Republicans are pushing to cut tens of thousands of legal immigrants off food stamps, partially reversing President Bush's efforts to win Latino votes by restoring similar cuts made in the 1990s.

The food stamp measure is just one of several provisions in an expansive congressional budget-cutting package that critics say unfairly targets the poor and disadvantaged, especially poor children.

Thank goodness! I have serious misgivings about importing third world poverty. Our immigration policies should first and foremost be designed to benefit current existing citizens. If an immigrant is unable to earn enough money to provide for his/her own family then they are not type of immigrant we should be admitting into America. We should limit immigration to those who can hit the ground running and be net contributors to our treasury rather than a drain.
