Merry Christmas!!

I want to wish every visitor to the site a very Merry Christmas and the best for the holidays! At the risk of bringing everybody down, I would encourage you, during this season of giving and joy, to think of those who are less fortunate:

Forty-one million children in Latin America won't cheer the holidays. They live in extreme poverty, i.e., on less than a dollar a day.

These boys and girls are born to exclusion -- often literally, as up to 20 percent are never officially registered -- and are virtually destined for a life of abuse, forced labor, prostitution, crime or disease. School, vacations, birthday parties, Nochebuena or Three-Kings' Day don't even enter their dreams.

I would not dream of bringing a child into this world that I could not afford to give a top knotch college education, let alone properly clothe, feed and protect.

What is wrong with these people who keep having children that are "virtually destined for a life of abuse, forced labor, prostitution, crime or disease"?

I have trouble mustering much sympathy in the face of such gross irresponsibility.

Unfortunately anonymous a lot of the time the women don't have much choice, they are at the mercy of their husbands and their wishes or worse. They don't have any access to birth control, some of them might not even know it exists. And their partners will not take no for an answer. The children are not the one to blame, nor are they responsible. You could try having sympathy for them at least.

Merry Christmas
