Enforcement and Compassion

From the Christian Science Monitor:

In the immigration debate, and specifically on the hot-button issue of day laborers, compassion and law enforcement can work together.

A country that has become addicted to the cheap labor of illegals has an obligation to respond in a kind way to a problem it tolerates and encourages. Work centers are an appropriate temporary solution that can turn chaos to order. And minimum-wage laws should apply to all.

But the bottom line is that the US is a country of laws. Illegal immigration is a large-scale abuse of the law, with social and economic costs. The fact that states considered more than 300 immigration bills last year shows the absolute failure of the federal government to enforce immigration laws.

America is built on the contribution of foreigners who settle here. But that contribution must be legal.

I am in favor of compassion. We should make sure they are well fed and well treated while they are sitting in detention camps awaiting deportation. Peanut butter is cheap, nutricious and yummy.

All lawbreakers should be treated with compassionate respect for their rights. But they should also be punished and the appropriate punishment for illegal immigration is deportation.

The only suggestions are racist suggestions! Why not expose the money taken from illegal aliens by our govt. People ask why the Govt. does nothing about it, the reason is because of the money the illegals pay into the system. Many work under fake S.S. #'s therefor they pay into S.S. but are never able to reclaim any of that money! Guess who keeps it? The Govt.! They are also never able to claim their income tax returns, and again the Govt. keeps it. They do pay into the system for hospitals and schools, those are funded from property tax, which is taken from purchasing a home or renting! So it is a great myth that they do not pay their share! Yes illegal is illegal but no legislation has been brought forth to fix the problem!

The illegal immigrants using fake social security numbers pay about $6 billion into Social Security. Very few of them earn enough to pay income taxes so that is about all they pay. Some file Income Tax Refunds and get the Earned Income Tax Credit which is welfare in disguise. They get a larger refund than the moneies that were withheld from their checks.

Here is an excellent study which identifies the contributions and costs of illegal immigrants to our Federal Treasury. It turns out that net of the Social Security discussed above, they cost the treasury about $6 billion. And it is estimated that if they were made legal, this net cost would grow to about $30 billion annually because all these new low income citizens would be suddenly eligible for the full buffet of social services that their illegal status prevents them from utilizing.

The High Cost of Cheap Labor

Illegal immigrant labor is a tremendous loser for the American taxpayer. The only thing that would be worse would be making all these poor people legal.

An incidently, there is nothing racist about demanding that the laws be enforced. I want ALL the illegals deported including ANY of European ancestry. People playing the race card don't belong on a conservative forum. Tell it to La Raza!

I'm confused. How do illegal immigrants file tax returns and get the earned income tax credit if they are using fake social security numbers?

They work using stolen Social Security numbers. Identity theft is a crime that gets a citizen in lots of trouble but apparently illegal aliens are allowed to commit these felonies with impunity. I'm not sure if there has ever been a prosecution of an illegal alien for these crimes. I follow this stuff closely and I have never read about one.

A lot of those social security numbers are valid. They belong to retirees, dead people and I read an article yesterday that children are now the targets of choice for identity theft because they can be easily duped into revealing this personal information. A lot of illegals have anchor babies of their own who have Social Security numbers and there is nothing stopping a working illegal alien from using "Junior's" Social Security number.

Most illegal aliens very low paid and it is easy for them to put down enough dependents on their W-2 Form so that income tax witholding is very low or zero.

Because they are masquarading as a real citizen, the illegal simply files an income tax return using the stolen identity and cashes the refund check when it comes.

Because their W-4 shows they have very low earnings, many qualify for the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC). The EITC is designed to help out the working poor (citizens, not illegal aliens) by addressing the regressive nature of employment taxes (social security and medicare) and giving them a partial or full refund of these taxes. It gives them a tax refund greater than the income taxes that were withheld from their check. It deceives the poor and the rest of the public into believing that poor people also contribute to Social Security when in fact they don't. We take their money for these taxes but then hand it right back to them at the end of the year. It is essentially welfare in disguise.

The reason you are confused is probably that you have not grasped the fact that there is NO American law that at least some illegal aliens are not willing to break if it stands between them and a better life.

I'm still confused. The IRS does not hand out credits to people who can't prove that they are eligible to receive them. If I'm an illegal alien using my anchor baby's SS#, a red flag will be triggered at the IRS that a child is not eligible for the credit. I understand that there is fraud, but anonymous continually refers to illegal immigrants as ignorant, unsophisticated and stupid, and no one makes a fool of the IRS, much less some ignorant illegal alien.
